My Side - David Beckham with Tom Watt
Large paperback in good used condition. With numerous B & W and colour photos. Collins Willow (2003). 405pp.
NZD: 5.50 / P & P : B
With endless newspaper column inches devoted to one of the most talked about men in the world, it seems that we know everything there is to know about David Beckham. Or do we? This is Beckham's life story in his own words. The book deals with his complex relationship with United boss Alex Ferguson and looks at how he handles the pressure of playing alongside some of the most volatile footballers of his generation, from the likes of Cantona, Schmeichel and Keane. It tells the England story, from being vilified by the nation before returning as the prodigal son and almost single-handedly guiding his country as captain to the 2002 World Cup Finals. From Beckham himself, we gain an insight into the family man behind the famous footballer, the international model and fashion leader. He describes how he first met and then married ex-Spice girl Victoria Adams and the upbringing of their two children Brooklyn and Romeo. He goes on to discuss how his family's every step is monitored by a posse of newshounds and paparazzi. He also tells of the influence of his parents, growing up as a shy youngster in the family home and how their subsequent split affected him. The book was written with the assistance of Tom Watt.Intimate and soul-searching, this is the real David Beckham like we have never seen before.

In Search of the Tiger - Ian Stafford
Large paperback in excellent condition, as new. Numerous colour photos. Published by Ebury Press (2003). 297pp.
NZD: 5.50 / P & P : B
Ian Stafford has tried his hand at most sports. He's played them with the world's finest sports men. From Steve Redgrave to Eddie Irvine, wrestler Pat Roach to the Wigan Warriors, Kenyan athletes to Australian cricketers, Ian has suffered humiliation, pain and a little bit of triumph with the best of them. He thought he'd seen it all. Until he tried golf. Never once did he think that the sport of golf was suited for him. It just wasn't his kind of game-or so he thought. But that was only in the beginning, before he picked up his first club or met Nick Faldo, Ernie Els, Jack Nicklaus, and Bernhard Langer and travelled to Greenland, Prague, New Orleans, and Tokyo. This was still way before he'd begun to think that he might actually be good at this golf business and long before he'd toyed with the crazy notion of coming face to face with the Tiger. Follow Ian Stafford through his journey into the wonderful world of golf, a sport that has become a global epidemic, as he comes to an understanding of the attraction to the course that no true golfer can ignore. With humour and excitement, he embarks on this thoroughly enjoyable quest to find the golfer within us all. Nothing could have prepared him for the sheer humiliation, frustration and exhilaration of the world's most popular game. Never would he have believed the obsession it generated, the passions it inflamed and the madmen that could be found on the green. With the help of stars, coaches and amateurs alike - from Bill (Clinton), Colin (Montgomery) and Nick (Faldo) to his local cab driver - he travels the world in the hope of improving his game. But however good he gets, will he ever get to play a round with the Tiger himself?
This is a book for those dedicated and fully consumed by golf or for those who have yet to feel the allure of the green . . .

Lifting the Lid on the Beautiful Game by Anonymous...

Large format paperback in very good used condition.
Published by Guardian Books (2012). 230pp.
NZD: 6.00 / P & P : B
The anonymous writer of the Guardian's 'Secret Footballer' column gives Premier League fans an insider's look into the unseen world of professional football.   "It is often said that 95 per cent of what happens in football takes place behind closed doors. Many of these stories I shouldn't be telling you. But I will."
Who is The Secret Footballer? Only a few people know the true identity of the man inside the game. Whoever he is - and whatever team he plays for - TSF is always honest, fearless and opinionated. Here, he takes readers past the locker-room door and reveals the inner workings of a professional club, the exhilarating highs and crushing lows, and what it's really like to do the job most of us can only dream of doing.
TSF chronicles the exploits of his Premiership colleagues with a gimlet eye and frank humour. Managers, agents and players are not spared from his observations - their mind sets, their relationships with those outside the sport, their behaviour good and bad. In his inimitable style, TSF recounts entertaining and eyebrow-raising vignettes, naming names and dropping colourful details along the way.
This book is an absorbing read for anyone who follows soccer.

At The Double - Richard Hadlee (with T. Francis)
The Story of Cricket's Pacemaker
Hardback with pictorial d/w, both in excellent condition, some light fading of the spine of d/w. Numerous B & W photographs. Hutchinson of New Zealand (1985). 166pp.
NZD: 6.00 / P & P : B
This is the story of Richard Hadlees 'purple' period between August 1983 and August 1984.
12 months in which he did more than anyone to catapult New Zealand cricket into the good times.
He inspired his country's first ever Test success on English soil, single-handedly destroyed their batting six months later and set up New Zealand's historic series victory against "the Poms": then he became the only cricketer in modern times to achieve the 'double' of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in an English season.
The world's great all-rounders like Sir Garfield Sobers, Mike Proctor, Imran Khan and Clive Rice all had a tilt at the traditional double and failed. With the reduction of the first class fixture list in 1969, no one believed it could be done again. Hadlee proved them wrong. He planned it like a military exercise.
Yet in the middle of his fabulous year, New Zealand's great bowler-batsman came perilously close to oblivion. He went to bed at night convinced he wouldn't make daybreak!  Hadlee arose from his trauma a positive thinker. His controversial views on the major issues of the game bristle with self-assurance -- whether it be the South African question, commercialism in cricket, or the touchy subject of overseas players in England. Hadlee delivers his opinions with
the same gusto which has dumped more than the occasional batsman on his rump!

First Past the Post - Brian Phillips (Editor)
Large format paperback in very good condition. Some light age fading of pages edge.
Published by Random House NZ (2000). 253pp.
NZD: 7.00 / P & P : B
In this collection, Brian Phillips has brought together stories from the world of horse racing, both fiction and non-fiction. The contributors include Maurice Gee, Ronald Hugh Morrieson and Barbara Anderson. This book succeeds is in reminding us how central the simple horse race was to 20th-century New Zealand national story. The collection of 31 tales, articles and poems from 1900 to 1999 trots through distinctly New Zealand scenes described in an intonation all our own: the country courses beneath "hills of stubble bleached platinum in the summer dry" or on a beach, tide-permitting; the murmur of the track as punters talk of a dead cert or the horse that will stay like a mortgage; or the Waikato school kids who would rather see Cardigan Bay than the Queen. Out of the stories come the silky thrill of raceday, the taste of Anzac biscuits and sausage rolls between races, the gallant sagas of Kindergarten and Rising Fast, and the pining of Bill Manhire's poem Phar Lap.
Although 31 stories on one single topic risks boring the unobsessed, this line-up is varied enough in length and style - the personal, humorous, literary and analytical are all there.
