Prehistory - Derek Roe
Paperback in excellent used condition. Numerous B & W illustrations.  Published by Paladin (1971).  288pp including index.

NZD 6.00 / P & P: B
THE BIRTH OF EUROPEAN MAN -  Prehistory is an introductory account of the main sequence of events in Old World Prehistory, from earliest times up to the expansion of the Roman Empire.  Europe is the main centre-of interest and special reference is made to Britain, but this is in no sense merely an account of British Prehistory and the wider context is carefully considered.  There are chapters for each of the main divisions of prehistory - the Old Stone Age, the Middle Stone Age, the New Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age - and a concluding section 'Prehistory: the modern approach' which describes the recent impact on prehistoric archaeology of borrowed or adapted scientific techniques, explaining briefly how some of them work.
An excellent introduction to a difficult subject and one of those all-too-rare books that present a specialised subject in simple terms without watering it down beyond recognition.  Derek Roe was an archaeologist who disliked excavating — he claimed that digging ruined his golf swing — but who made important contributions to the study of early prehistory in both Britain and Africa. He was also the first formal archaeology correspondent of The Times.

A Literary Atlas & Gazetteer of the British Isles - Michael Hardwick
Hardback, red cloth in excellent condition. No d/w. Tight binding and bright clean pages. David & Charles (1973). First Edition. 216pp.
NZD 7.50 / P & P: B
Every schoolboy and girl knows that Gray wrote his Elegy at Stoke Poges but probably not everyone knows that Sir Edward Coke, the first Lord Chief Justice and formative legal writer lived in nearby Stoke Place in the seventeenth century. And if you were passing through Crosthwaite in Cumberland, would you remember that Southey lies buried there? These are typical of some 4, 500 entries that make this atlas-gazetteer a perfect reference book for the traveller with literary interests and time to spare. It is an exhaustive guide to the United Kingdom's literary associations, providing the basic biographical facts. All the entries are arranged conveniently under counties and their towns and villages and each is keyed into the relevant maps which are printed in two colours and drawn by A. G. Hodgkiss. The atlas will also serve the busy reference librarian faced with an urgent inquiry, the biographer contemplating the scope of a potential subject and the local journalist seeking a signpost to a writer worth writing about. The literary-minded browser, too, is likely to be stimulated and, far from least, the tourist, whether from abroad or from Britain, will be able to explore on the ground the places associated with his favourite writers. Michael Hardwick, author, playwright, and journalist, is well-known both in Britain and North America for his studies in English literature. His many 'companions' to the works of famous authors such as Dickens, Conan Doyle, G. Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde are especially popular, as are his essays in literary topography. He draws on many years of research in compiling the book. Hodgkiss is cartographer to the Department of Geography at the University of Liverpool and author of Maps for Books and Theses.

Model Soldiers - W.Y. Carman
Letts All-Colour Collector's Guides

Hardback with d/j, both in excellent condition. 65 colour plates of highly collectible rare vintage Toy Soldiers. Publisher Charles Letts (1973). 82pp.
NZD 7.50 / P & P: C
Collecting model soldiers, like collecting dolls, has a two-fold appeal to the collector. Not only is he acquiring antiques or future antiques, which are of historical and sociological interest, but he is also building up a collection of objects of considerable emotive impact-and this quality is particularly strong for the collector who is also a war-gamer.
This book, however, is intended more for the 'non-combatant' collector and, therefore, includes a preponderance of the older antique and potentially antique figures.
The author does, however, have a strong awareness and appreciation of the modern connoisseur figures; pieces painstakingly produced today to a very high standard of artistry.
The historical development is, therefore, traced up until the present day, both in the introduction and in the comprehensive range of figures-taken almost entirely' from the author's own collection - used in the colour plates.

Three Masquerades - Marilyn Waring
Essays on Equality, Work and Human Rights
Large paperback in excellent condition.
Published by Auckland University Press (1996). 206pp. inc. Index.
NZD 6.50 / P & P: B
Marilyn Waring probes the world behind the mask in the three essays presented in this volume.
The first essay examines the mask that women who hold parliamentary office are forced to wear.
It questions the reasons behind women being trapped by institutionalism, the effect this has on their ability to make progress on issues important to them and the effect it has on self-image. The personal anecdotal style of this book makes it highly readable. It would make a good addition to an international law collection and as a text illuminating the field of international human rights. If you wanted to make sure that your collection contained numerous points of view on world economics and politics this book would surely be an original.

Divided into two sections, the book looks at life before and after emigration. The opening chapters will help readers work out whether taking the plunge really is for them. Time to Emigrate - George Walden
Paperback in excellent, near new condition.
Published by Gibson Square (2007). 286pp.
NZD 6.00 / P & P: B
In an explosive new book, "Time to Emigrate?", the author George Walden concludes that the future is so uncertain and pessimistic for millions of middle class families that the only secure option is to emigrate.
This sober factual overview of day to day life in Britain, by a former government minister, MP and father of three children shows how middle-income earners such as nurses, small businessmen, police officers and teachers are hardest hit and are no longer represented by Government or the authorities.
Written as a letter from a father concerned about his children's future and the impending pessimism within our country, Walden outlines a series of breaking points to life in Britain.
The idea for "Time to Emigrate?" first came about when one of George Walden's sons asked him whether he should emigrate.
He set about writing down a few of his thoughts in a letter. The notes grew and grew. When Walden discovered that many of his son's generation were considering the same question he decided to use his notes for a book, "Time to Emigrate?" an exceptionally provocative book that will be furiously debated in the media as he attacks the onslaught of multiculturalism.  Sadly, his thoughts were proven to be far too close to today's reality as we now know, years later...

The Road Ahead - Bill Gates
Paperback in excellent condition.
Published by Penguin Books. 332pp inc. index.
NZD 5.50 / P & P: B
The Harvard dropout who founded Microsoft based on his vision of a personal computer in every home and on every desk offers a clearly written, accessible book which describes how the tools of the future will change the way we make choices about everything, from what we buy to how we choose our friends to how we protect our families in an increasingly complicated world.
The Road Ahead touches on aspects of life that are close to everyone.
Bill Gates, who is famous around the world for his successful computer business, Microsoft, gives readers fascinating insights into how personal computers are going to continue to change our lives in the future and how the Internet will continue to evolve.
Gates is optimistic and enthusiastic, taking the reader into a world of the near future—a world where less paper is used, where teachers share their work and reach more students than ever before, where companies can hold meetings around the world without anyone having to leave the office, where a house can recognize its owner and play his or her favourite music to welcome the person home.
The Road Ahead is also Gates’ view of how the Internet, also known as the Information Highway, will continue to affect everybody living in the world. Gates isn’t blind to the problems that might arise in the future, but he stresses the fact that the computer is nothing more than a useful tool, and must be treated as such.
