Water Birds with Webbed Feet - Paul Geroudet. Hardback with light blue cloth boards (& coloured illustrated d/j) in excellent condition. Published by Blandford Press Ltd. (1965). 318 pages. 48 illustrations (24 in colour), by Robert Hainard and 59 line drawings. NZD: 6.50 / P & P : B Paul Geroudet is one of the leading Swiss ornithologists and this book was originally published in Switzerland. In this book the author has the original idea of grouping together the birds with webbed feet, irrespective of their scientific classification, though this is clearly explained in each species dealt with. The majority of web-footed birds which occur in the British Isles and Western Europe are described, and detailed information given in a way that has not previously been attempted. With increasing travel facilities more and more bird-watchers are looking for a book which includes coverage of the bird life of the continent and Geroudet amply fulfils this need so far as the many groups he describes are concerned. A valuable addition to the book are the detailed references given as to sources of information concerning each species. It is not only a handy guide to identification in the field but also a useful aid to more detailed and profound study.

Marley and Me - John Grogan Life and love with the world's worst dog... Large paperback in excellent condition. Hachette Books (2006). 292pp. NZD: 5.00 / P & P : B This is a heart-warming book about a lovable but incorrigible Labrador named Marley and the family that loves him. Grogan shares a very personal story about his life and how a certain dog came along and changed everything. Marley & Me tells a beautiful tale that most dog owners can truly relate to. This is a book for dog lovers, and for those who have been loved by a dog. The Grogans may not have been the best dog trainers in the world, and they may have made a common mistake of buying their dog from a backyard breeder, but what they did right was they loved their dog, and stayed devoted to him through his whole life, from puppyhood to old age. In this throwaway society, where many people consider pets to be "disposable", to be dumped at the pound when they are no longer a cute puppy, or when they start misbehaving, the Grogans did what all responsible pet owners should do. They stuck with Marley, they tried to learn, they tried obedience classes, they worked with their vet to help control Marley's issues, and they actually considered their dog a part of their family, through good and through bad. Marley was one lucky dog, to have been owned by a family who loved him for who he was, and loved him for his whole life. Every dog should be so lucky.

The Tulip - Anna Pavord Paperback in excellent condition. Bloomsbury Publishing (2000). 296pp. NZD: 6.50 / P&P: B In an auction held in Holland in February 1637, 99 lots of tulip bulbs fetched a staggering 90,000 guilders, more than $3.5 million in today's money. Tulipomania had reached its height, and its story is told in just one of the fascinating sections of Anna Pavord's wonderful book on this most seductive of flowers. Pavord's passion for the flower is evident from the opening pages of the book, where she tells of scrambling across the hillsides of Crete in search of an obscure, indigenous purple tulip. The story of the discovery of this tulip leads into Pavord's extraordinary history of this beautiful, enigmatic flower. As with all the best love stories, Pavord's is told from the perspective of the object of affection--in this case, the tulip--from its adoption by the Ottoman sultans of Istanbul in the 18th century to its present cultivation by the Wakefield Tulip Society. Along the way, incredible stories of people's investments in the flower emerge, the result, as Pavord explains, of a unique feature of the tulip. Its variegated colours are produced by a small parasitic aphid, which weakens the plant but produces its gorgeous hues. The tulipomania that gripped 17th-century Europe was a form of futures trading, as people purchased tulip bulbs at increasingly inflated prices with the hope that they would flower into the most beautiful and kaleidoscopic colours imaginable. An extraordinary book, beautifully illustrated and offering a fascinating story of our obsession with the most ephemeral of objects. Buying tulip bulbs will never be the same again. Greed, desire, anguish, and devotion have all played their part in the development of the tulip from a wild flower of the Asian steppes to the worldwide phenomenon it is today. No other flower has ever carried so much cultural baggage: it charts political upheavals, illuminates social behaviour, mirrors economic booms and busts, and plots the ebb and flow of religious persecution.

Cleo - Helen Brown How a small black cat helped heal a family... Paperback in excellent NEW condition. Allen & Unwin (2010). 316pp. NZD: 6.00 / P&P: A Helen Brown wasn't a cat person, but her nine-year-old son Sam was. So when Sam heard a woman telling his mum that her cat had just had kittens, he pleaded to go and see them. Helen's heart melted as Sam held one of the kittens in his hands, with a look of total adoration. In a trice the deal was done - the kitten would be delivered when she was big enough to leave her mother. A week later, Sam was dead. Not long after, a little black kitten was delivered to the grieving family. Totally traumatised by Sam's death, Helen had forgotten all about the new arrival. She was ready to send the kitten back, but Sam's younger brother wanted to keep her. There was no choice: Cleo had to stay. Kitten or not, there seemed no hope of becoming a normal family. But Cleo's zest for life slowly taught the traumatised family to laugh. She went on to become the uppity high priestess of Helen's household, vetoing her new men, terrifying visiting dogs and building a special bond with Rob, his sister Lydia, Helen - and later a baby daughter.
